My main job in life has been helping you find ways to address and improve lost abilities which can be difficult to get back. Every time I find a new way of looking at this - no matter how small - I produce an article to help ensure it’s not missed.
The stepdown is an effective exercise to reduce knee pain and improve knee ability in life, but a common problem surfaces when someone CANNOT DO THE LOWEST STEP WITHOUT KNEE PAIN.
Fortunately, when you realize that there are infinite tiny levels between stepping UP and stepping DOWN, this ability gets a lot simpler and more pleasant to work on!

With your off foot behind you and pushing off the toes, you can work on the control of your body on the way down at a VERY LOW AMOUNT OF KNEE PRESSURE.

I usually use around 20 reps (slow down, fast up), 1-3 times per week.
WITHOUT EVER WORKING THROUGH PAIN, you can gradually increase the ability of your legs while building your knee tendons (the things that hold your muscles to your bones).
[To be clear: progression is from your off foot farther behind you, to in front of you, with all levels in between being valid! Simply work at YOUR pain-free level.]

Thank you for studying another little step forward - rather than avoiding it - on the subject of knee ABILITY.
Yours in Solutions,
Ben
